Introduction:

Have you ever tried the cinnamon apples side dish at the popular chain restaurant Chili’s?  They’re delicious.  Chunks of tenderly cooked apples, glazed in a pool of hot gooey, cinnamony, caramely sauce.  *dreamy pause*  Ok, back to the blog…Though we’ve eaten at Chili’s before, Preston and Nolan are new to this delightful discovery.  They love them.  We’re talking clean plates!!

Based on their new love, I knew I had to try to make these at home.  They seem to be a crowd pleaser among the children and adults!  And my favorite part of this recipe, other than their deliciousness and the fact that I feel like I’m eating apple pie filling with dinner, is that I can toss everything in the crockpot and voila, a great side dish in about 2 hours.  These Crockpot Cinnamon Honey Apples reheat perfectly as well, making it a nice make-ahead side for the long week ahead.

Resources:

  • Crockpot
  • Mixing bowl
  • Cutting board

Procurements:

  • 5-7 apples, peeled and cut into 1” cubes to yield approximately 6 cups
  • 1/4 c. brown sugar
  • 1 T. honey
  • 1 T. butter, cut into cubes
  • 1/2 T. corn starch
  • 1 t. cinnamon
  • 1 t. vanilla extract
  • Dash each of dried ground clove, ginger, & nutmeg  (or whatever you have on hand!)
  • Pinch of salt

Operating Procedures:

Toss all ingredients into the crockpot, stir, and cook on low for about 2 hours or until the apples are tender.  Serve immediately while warm or save and reheat for later.

Proposals:

These are great as a side dish, but I could imagine combining a couple tablespoons of oats and chopped nuts, cut with about a tablespoon of butter and topped on about a cup of the apples during a reheat in the toaster oven.  It would make a great breakfast or dessert!

Closing Remarks:

I chose Gala apples but I imagine almost any type would work well.  Dare I say you mix a variety of apples, as a Granny Smith or two in the mix might add a tart welcome surprise.  🙂
