Faux Fur Pom Pom Textured Hat
Free Crochet Pattern
This past year, it seems like the faux fur pom poms have taken the world by storm! Just this past Saturday, I went tubing at Wisp Resort in Maryland with my husband and 2 boys. Of course a cold outing like that has me eyeing up all the hats, and I’d say about half the venue had these faux fur pom poms topping thiers. This Faux Fur Pom Pom Textured Hat would have fit right in.
There are a few tutorials online to help make your own, but if you don’t have time for that, I recommend these pom poms from Amazon. Although they took some time to ship, it was worth it. Good quality, and look great, especially after fluffing them with a hair dryer. Best of all, the pom pom detaches with a snap button, so it can be removed before washing the hat.
With many of my hats that start along the brim, I like to use a foundation single crochet so that they can easily stretch. A great tutorial for this stitch can be found here.
- Size H (5.00 mm) crochet hook
- Yarn Needle, for weaving in ends
- Approximately 100 yards of Caron Simply Soft Yarn (shown here is Platinum Sparkle , Black & Pagoda)
- Faux Fur Pom Pom
Note that the stitch counts include the starting chains.
Adult Hat (child size recommendations below):
Row 1: Foundation single crochet (fsc) 64 stitches. Sl St into ch 1. Do not twist. (64)
Row 2: Sc in each st around (I like to place this row of sc back into the ch marked by the X in the picture below). St st into the top of the ch 1. (64).
Rows 3–6: Ch 1, knit st in each st around. Sl st into the top of the ch 1. (64) – work knit stitch loosely for best results
Row 7: Ch 3 and dc in the back loop only of each stitch around. Sl st into the top of the ch 3. (64)
Row 8: Ch 3, *fpdc in the next st, dc in the following st*. Repeat * before sl st into the top of the ch 3. (64)
Row 9: Ch 4, *dc in the next fpdc from the previous round, fpdc in the next dc from the previous round*. Repeat * before sl st into the top of the ch 4. (64)
Row 10: Ch 3, *fpdc in the next dc from the previous round, dc in the next fpdc from the previous round*. Repeat * before sl st into the top of the ch 3. (64)
Repeat rows 9 & 10 until the height of the entire work measures 8″ and then move onto the final row:
Ch 3, dc2tog around the entire hat, and end with 1 DC. (32) Tie off, leaving a 12″ tail.
Turn the hat inside out. Weave the tail in and out of the final dc row. Cinch together and tie off.
Sew on the pom pom and weave in any other ends.
For a child size hat, I would recommend a stitch count of 58 (instead of 64 as shown in the adult hat) and working the repeated rows until the height of the entire work measures 7″ before moving onto the final row.
For the perfect fit, use any combination of even stitches.
