Bath time to me usually means a bath tub turned wave pool filled with 2 crazy boys, while I attempt to wash away an outside layer of the snakes and snails and puppy dog tails.  Every now and again though, usually after the boys are off to dream land, I find my place of serenity in a hot bath.  I tend to always be freezing so the water really help to warm me up and relax before bed time. 

I love using different bath products, bubbles, washes, etc.  Recently though, particularly after the long winter, I’ve come to realize how nice baking soda transforms bath water.  It gives our harsh, hard water a silky feeling and leaves my skin so smooth, soothing my dry winter skin.  I find that this simple lavender bath soak, with baking soda and Epsom salts, adds a nice touch to the bath.

I chose lavender oil, as the scent is said to help put you into a relaxed state (I can use all the relaxation I can get!), but any scent of your choosing would do. 


  • Mixing bowl
  • Mixing spoon


  • 2 c. Epsom salts
  • 1 c. baking soda (8 oz. box)
  • 1/2 t. essential oil – lavender or other scent of your choosing






Operating Procedures:

Mix the baking soda and Epsom salts until well combined.  Blend in approximately 1/2 t. essential oil.  Mix well. 


I add about 1 c. of the mix to every bath.  You can add more or less to your liking though. 

A glass of wine on the side is optional, but highly recommended!

Closing Remarks: 

This recipe can be doubled, tripled, etc. until your heart is content.  I like to do a double batch, add it to a Ziploc bag or mason jar, and keep it next to the bath tub.  In a decorative jar, this would make a great homemade gift, as well.
